Meet our CEO, Stephen Dize
In honor of OneVoice Communications Inc.’s 21st anniversary this month, we decided to interview our Founder & CEO, Stephen Dize. From his first job to what he does outside of the office, get to know the man who started it all.
Describe yourself in 5 words.
These are the 5 words I think describe me: Humorous, entrepreneurial, perfectionist, generous, persistent
Who inspired you to pursue the career you have today?
I can’t think of a particular person but it was more of circumstance that guided my career path. In 1996, with the passage of the Telecommunications Act, I was fortunate enough to be in the right spot at the right time. The company I worked for (Cable & Wireless) established a new group to explore the opportunities provided by the Act and determine how it could benefit C&W. It was this group that lit the fire that ultimately led to the creation of OneVoice.
Why did you start OneVoice? What made you interested in the telecommunications industry?
In the late 90s, I was working for a telecom company in DC, Net Tel, that went bankrupt. During this time, I was working on the idea of launching a small reseller that would focus exclusively on the consumer and small business space in Virginia only. As I worked through the model it became clear that this could be a national play. With the bankruptcy, I was forced to determine whether I wanted to work for another firm or give my idea a shot.
What was your first job?
My first job was working as a paper carrier for the Anchorage Times at 10 years old. Followed by Best Department Store in high school.
How would you describe your company culture?
Empowering, good work ethic by all, service focused, grateful and work as a team. Truly awesome people.
What are you currently streaming?
Billions, Last Kingdom, Ted Lasso.
OneVoice holds many events and gatherings for employees, what would your favorite be?
Our holiday party has always been a tradition and it reminds me how thankful I am to have dedicated employees working with me.
What have been the biggest challenges you’ve had to overcome either at OneVoice or in general?
Growing the company organically without pursuing outside funding has been a challenge but we grew the company with a dedicated, hard-working and optimistic staff.
What are your interests outside of managing the company?
I enjoy hiking, wine tastings, Steelers’ football and spending time with my family
What is your favorite movie and why?
I have several favorites, but Field of Dreams is always at the top. My eye may have leaked a little during a few scenes. Followed by Old School for obvious reasons (pretty sure this could actually happen).
Where do you see OneVoice in the future?
Our model enables us to integrate new technologies and react to changing market trends. This ability has provided us the capability to transform over the past 21 years and is a proven platform for future growth.
What are you most proud of regarding the company?
I’m proud that I took a chance starting a company, found great employees and continue to grow the company after 21 years.
Here’s to another 21 years!
